What to Expect During a Newborn Photography Session

As all parents know, life with a newborn can be hectic and messy — so much so that the prospect of setting aside hours for a newborn photography session can feel daunting. But I pride myself on providing a relaxing and caring environment for parents and babies alike during the process. Some parents have even fallen asleep on our couch while the session is in progress!

What to expect at a newborn portrait session with me...

All sessions are pre-booked and scheduled. Typically, we’ll discuss props, poses, and colors during the booking process, but we’ll confirm it all when you arrive. Then, the portraits begin! During the photo shoot, which require parent’s presence, the parents can choose to either relax on the couch and watch (or nap!) or to be more involved in the process.

I follow a traditional schedule during the shoot, but the comfort and needs of your baby always come first. If your baby needs to feed, the shoot will be delayed a little so that can happen – no problem. If your baby is gassy or has reflux, we’ll use positions that make them feel more comfortable.

More Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a newborn photo session take?

A traditional package will be around an hour, while a full package could take as long as four.

What’s the best time to schedule a session?

As early as possible. Since due dates are estimations, a session is not given an exact date until after delivery. At this time, I only take newborns on the weekend and sessions per month are limited.

What about older siblings?

If siblings are involved in the shoot, we recommend that they come for the beginning, so that we can get those portraits done first. Afterwards, it’s best to have someone who can watch over the children outside of the studio.

What should I bring?

You should bring with you to the studio:

  • All the diaper bag essentials: diapers, a pacifier, extra formula if applicable
  • A change of clothing for everyone
  • Snacks – we provide some, but it’s good to have some extras on hand in case the session goes long!

What else should I know?

The studio is warmed for the comfort of your baby, so come dressed for warm weather! Also, keep in mind all babies are different and have different needs. It’s completely normal for a baby to be fussy during the process. There’s no need to worry or be embarrassed!
